Taoyuan Airport to Hualien with Kids and Grandparents: Best Ways Compared
Mellow Away editors · 8 min read

Landing at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) with grandparents and kids, then heading straight to Hualien, is a classic east-coast start - and involves lots of travel logistics! There is no single best door-to-door ride: the right choice depends on bags, energy after a long flight, and how much walking your group can tolerate before check-in. This guide compares the main ways to travel from Taoyuan Airport to Hualien with kids and grandparents, with realistic timeframes, tradeoffs, and who each mode suits. Just note that timetables and traffic may impact timeframes mentioned in this article and building in buffer time as travelling in a group is always takes that extra bit of time.
Why Hualien for a multi-gen trip?
Hualien is Taiwan’s east-coast base for Taroko viewpoints, coastal air, and a slower rhythm than Taipei. For three generations, day one is often a travel day, not a gorge day. We recently travelled to Taipei and were stuck in the immigration queue for roughly an hour. Build in buffer time for immigration, snack breaks, toilet breaks and waiting for the elevator. If you’re taking the Aiport MRT and the Taiwan Railway trains, also build in transfer time between the two, especially if strollers or mobility aids are involved.
Quick comparison (planning ranges)
Use these as order-of-magnitude ranges from the TPE arrivals hall toward central Hualien for each mode of transport. Note these are rough guides.
• Airport MRT Express + reserved TRA train: often about 3.5–5+ hours including airport exit, MRT (~35-40 minutes express), station transfer, and a 2–3 hour TRA ride depending on train type and buffer. • Coach bus via Taipei / Banqiao / Nangang (when operating): usually longer overall from TPE because you still reach a city bus station first; the Hualien bus leg alone is often cited around 3.5-4.5 hours and can be holiday-limited. • Private transfer or pre-booked car/van from TPE: commonly about 3-3.5 hours via National Highway 5 and the Suhua Improvement corridor when roads are open. Traffic and weather can stretch this. • Taxi from TPE: similar road time to a private car, usually pricier, with less certainty about vehicle size and stops. • Domestic flight via Taipei Songshan (TSA) to Hualien (HUN): air time is often around 50 minutes, but TPE→Songshan, check-in, and the airport–city hop can erase the “fast flight” feel for mixed ages.
Note that the High Speed Rail (HSR) does not reach Hualien. An Airport MRT stop near Taoyuan HSR helps travelling to west-coast Taiwan cities, but not east coast Taiwan.
Option 1: Airport MRT + TRA train (the default for most families)
For most groups researching how to get from Taoyuan airport to Hualien with family, Airport MRT plus Taiwan Railway is the balanced choice: reserved seats, northeast-coast scenery, and stations with elevators when you plan exits carefully.
From Terminal 1 (A12) or Terminal 2 (A13), take the Airport MRT Express toward Taipei Main Station (A1). Its straight forward to buy tickets from the ticket machines at the terminal station. Trains depart every 15 minutes so no need to book in advance. Although if you’re looking for a seat, it might be worth waiting for the next train and being the first on board. There aren’t many seats on this train! Official express times are often around 36–39 minutes depending on terminal. At Taipei Main station, follow signs to TRA / Taiwan Railways. Its roughly a 10 minute walk between the two. There’s plenty of food and drink (including takeaway options) at Taiwan Main station - so something for everyone if you have time. It’s advisable to book a reserved-seat express such as Taroko, Puyuma, or other limited-express / EMU services when available; many Taipei-Hualien expresses take roughly 2–2.5 hours, while slower services can run closer to 3 hours. Confirm live schedules on the official TRA site or app. Tickets for these express trains are available approximately 28 days prior to departure. Our flight landed in Taoyuan airport at 10am. We had booked in advance a 1.15pm train from Taipei Main Station to Hualien - we ended up with roughly 45 minutes between getting off the Airport MRT and needing to board our train to Hualien.
Benefits for kids and grandparents:
• Everyone sits with a ticketed seat if you reserve early - critical on weekends and holidays. • Room to stand briefly, use the restroom, and watch coast and mountains scenery without highway curves the whole way. • Taipei Main and Hualien stations generally offer elevators and accessible routes when you allow time to find them plus plenty of food options. • Cost stays moderate compared with a private van for a full multi-gen party.
Tradeoffs: one meaningful luggage transfer after a long flight; popular Taipei main station to Hualien train seats sell out (reservations commonly open about 28 days ahead); arrival afternoon should be check-in and a short walk, not travelling all the way out to Taroko Gorge.
Multi-gen tip: assign one adult to tickets/screenshots, one to snacks/water, and keep rolling bags you can lift onto a train.
Option 2: Coach bus (budget, fewer seat guarantees)
Long-distance coaches between greater Taipei and Hualien exist, but they are rarely the smoothest Airport MRT to Hualien path for elders. You typically need Airport MRT or taxi into Taipei, Banqiao, or Nangang first. Some coastal services are holiday-oriented - verify the operator’s current calendar.
Benefits: often cheaper than express train fares; one seated coach segment once you reach the bus terminal. Tradeoffs: longer seated time (often 3.5–4.5 hours on the Hualien leg alone), less aisle room than a train, weather delays, and an extra city transfer from TPE before the coach starts.
Choose bus when budget dominates and your group handles long coach rides well. Skip it when anyone needs frequent stretch breaks or you arrive late with heavy bags. Be wary of those who are easily impacted by motion sickness. Train is probably the better option.
Option 3: Private transfer or pre-booked van (least walking)
A licensed private transfer Taoyuan airport to Hualien is the comfort play: meet-and-greet, luggage in the trunk, optional restroom stops, and door-to-hotel drop-off. Expect roughly 3-3.5 hours by car when National Highway 5 and the Suhua Improvement Highway are flowing. Confirm child-seat policies, van capacity, and T1 vs T2 pickup instructions with the private transfer operator.
Benefits for multi-gen: minimal walking after immigration; space for strollers, walkers, and oversized luggage if you book a large enough vehicle; you control snack and toilet stops; ideal after ultra-long-haul flights when energy is low.
Tradeoffs: highest cost for most parties; road time can exceed the fastest train’s seated duration; weather still matters. Book a properly licensed prepaid operator and avoid unsolicited airport touts.
Best for larger families, mobility limits, or anyone who values door-to-door calm over saving a few hundred TWD.
Option 4: Taxi from TPE
Airport queue taxis can, in theory, take you east, but a metered long-haul to Hualien is usually expensive and awkward for a full multi-gen load. Vehicle size and rest stops vary. For transport by car, a pre-booked private transfer with a fixed quote is usually better for everyone. Keep your Hualien hotel address in Chinese characters for any driver—including short hops from Hualien Station.
Option 5: Domestic flight via Songshan (when air time looks tempting)
Flights from Taipei Songshan (TSA) to Hualien (HUN) are often advertised around 50 minutes. Starting at TPE, you still reach Songshan, clear domestic check-in, fly, then transfer from Hualien Airport into town. Two airports in one day after an international arrival is a lot of walking and waiting for kids and grandparents. Limited frequency means delays cascade into hotel check-in. Treat the flight as a specialty backup when TRA seats are impossible—not the default first-night plan from TPE.
Which mode fits your group?
• Prioritize reserved TRA seats if your group can handle one station transfer and wants scenery plus value—the answer most Taipei to Hualien trips with kids and grandparents trips land on. • Prioritize private transfer if walking and luggage would otherwise define the day. • Prioritize bus only when budget is tight, schedules match, and coach comfort is proven for your household. • Prioritize Songshan–Hualien flight only when train seats are impossible and you accept multi-airport friction.
Booking and buffer checklist
• Reserve Taiwan Railway seats as soon as the booking window opens; holiday weekends fill up fast. • Screenshot Airport MRT and TRA confirmations offline. • Pack a shared snack kit and empty bottles to refill when rules allow. • Build a “missed connection” buffer if your international flight lands tight against the last comfortable train. • Check weather and east-coast transport notices before road or coach segments. • On the return: TRA to Taipei Main, then Airport MRT to TPE with generous departure buffer.
Bottom line
Getting from Taoyuan Airport to Hualien with kids is less about a secret shortcut and more about matching energy to mode. Airport MRT + reserved TRA train remains the everyday sweet spot for most multi-gen families. Private transfer wins when walking and luggage would otherwise define the day. Bus and domestic flight can work in niche cases—after you add honest connection time. Arrive safely, sleep well, and save the Pacific cliffs and Taroko viewpoints for a fresher morning.
